Jimi Hendrix FAQ
Gary J. Jucha (Backbeat Books 2013, Trade Paperback) 363 pages, illustrated and indexed $22.99 cover price
Great, great, great, great, great book. In seventeen years as a music writer for a variety of publications, a lot of books about legendary rockers and Blues artists have crossed my desk and occasionally crossed my eyes. This is as good as it gets.
One thing I admire about Backbeat Books FAQ series is that the publisher does not restrict its writers to turning out product just designed for the hardcore fan. Rather, they are equally parts factually complete, instructive yet also personal to the author. This truly is the best of the lot.
The beauty of Jimi Hendrix FAQ is that one does not have to be specifically a Jimi Hendrix mark to enjoy it. For one thing, there are enough shrewdly observed anecdotes about The Who (Pete Townshend was quite jealous), The Rolling Stones, Cream and Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa and Bob Dylan to keep the interest and insight running for any fan of the glorious 1960s rock scene.
Beyond that, Jucha truly analyzes track by track the canon that Hendrix left us, including the post-humous releases. Jucha knows music, he is not afraid to say what is good and what is to be avoided. Keep YouTube running in the background while you read, as various concerts and recordings are mentioned and you will have a great, great time.
